ASSISTANCE WITH CITATION SEARCHING FOR NRF RESEARCH RATINGS

The Library offers Wits researchers access to the following databases for NRF research ratings:

1. ISI Web of Science. See http://www.wits.ac.za/library/elecres/titlelist.htm#i. This is the combined version of the Science Citation Index, Social Sciences Citation Index and Arts and Humanities Citation Index. It provides researchers with information on who is citing their work and their impact on the global research community. This database is available from 2001 onwards.

2. ISI Journal Citation Reports. See http://www.wits.ac.za/library/elecres/titlelist.htm#i. This database provides statistical data on the ISI journals and their impact and influence in the global research community

3. DiALOG databases. The Library offers, through its Senior Librarians, a citation search service using the DIALOG databases. This enables a comprehensive citation search to be carried out by librarians for the researcher.

4. CD-ROM databases. The Library has the following back years available on CD-ROM:

Science Citation Index (Jan 1986-Dec 2000(

Social Sciences Citation Index (Jan 1986-Dec 2000)

Arts and Humanities Citation Index (Jan 1980-Dec 2000)

Please make an appointment to see, or at least discuss over the phone, the citation search required with one of our Senior Librarians mentioned below. They may need a researcher’s assistance to refine the search and may also need to consult senior colleagues.

Please be aware that the Library covers the basic cost but that extensive searches may entail additional costs. These should be covered by research grants. The cost of a search is not set in advance but depends on the results required and/or obtained.

Limited citation searching can be done by individual researchers using the Web of Science databases or ISI CD-ROM databases for years earlier than 2001.
