An introduction to
Ion Beam Microprobes

  • The Microprobe focuses a beam of ions from an accelerator onto a sample, and scans them over the sample.
  • Atomic and nuclear reactions occur between the beam particles and the sample particles
  • This results in phenomena that can be detected.
  • The specific features of the detected phenomena "fingerprint" a characteristic of the sample.
  • In this way, a sample can be analysed for different elements
  • Detection limits can be in the range of a part per miillion.
  • Ths computer can reconstruct quantitative images from this process.
